MCSA presents:

It's Your Ship! - Leadership
Navigating the Waters of Your Communications Center

December 3 at

The International in Bolton

0830 am to 4:30 pm

This all new PSTC class focuses on leadership issues for all levels of emergency communications centers. The class helps students learn the key traits of a successful leader and ways to ensure that you can achieve a level of leadership that co-workers will appreciate and respect. The perfect student for this course is a current lead, supervisor, manager, director, trainer, training manager or line level staff member that strives to be a future leader.

Existing "leaders" are strongly encouraged to attend so they can evaluate their best traits and set goal to be more effective. Sadly, many agencies promote or hire Supervisors but never guide or train them to be true leaders. That sets the scene for the replication of bad habits, no supervisory skill sets and a loss of respect from the "troops".

This class gets your team in the mindset of leadership with tools that can be used immediately.

Topics included in this class are:
  • Building a foundation of trust
  • Mission and Purpose - affirming the mission
  • Demonstrating a commitment to excellence
  • Recruiting, training and keeping the best people
  • Motivating staff and remediating poor performance
  • Lead by Example - what does that really mean?
  • Building Alliances - Building Bridges - Building Respect
  • Effective communications styles (both written and verbal)
  • Empowering individuals and teams
  • How to lead by example and gain faithful followers
  • Knowing and adapting to your team
  • Understanding the generational divide
  • Gen X & Y success!
  • Measuring success and learning from failure
  • Mentorship in the workplace
  • Having and communicating key values

State 911 Department, Message to PSAPs Regarding Grant Reimbursements

Message to PSAPs Regarding Grant Reimbursements from State 911 Department

The State 911 Department (Department) continues its efforts to process all reimbursements for PSAPs under the Department’s grant program.  To expedite this process, the plan for addressing outstanding reimbursements as of October 14, 2014 under the FY 2012, FY 2013 and/or FY 2014 Support and Incentive Grant program and/or Training Grant/Regulatory Compliance Grant program, is as follows.

First, for those outstanding reimbursements where the review process has begun, the Department will continue its review and issue payments by December 31, 2014.

Second, for those outstanding reimbursements where the review process has not begun, PSAPs will receive a payment equivalent to 75% of the initial reconciliation of those outstanding reimbursements. The Department will begin processing those payments on October 15, 2014 and will complete this process by December 31, 2014.  The balance of the funds owed will be processed as timely as possible as the Department works through the backlog and completes the final reconciliation of the individual reimbursement requests.

For PSAPs that still have outstanding FY 2014 reimbursements not yet submitted, please submit those reimbursements before October 14, 2014.  Any FY 2014 reimbursement request received after October 14, 2014 will be processed as soon as possible, but after we finish the reimbursement plan described above.

With respect to the FY 2015 reimbursements, the Department will continue to work within the guidelines to review submissions and issue payments as soon as possible.  The Department will make every effort to process reimbursements within the 30-day window, understanding there may exceptions based on the individual submission.

We thank you for your continued patience and cooperation.

Frank Pozniak

Executive Director

State 911 Department

Sad News - The Passing of Bob 'Red ' Button

MCSA is sad to announce the passing of Bob “Red” Button, one of the original founders and supporters of the Massachusetts Communications Supervisor Association. Bob was instrumental in developing training standards for the State 9-1-1 Dispatch Academy and donated many hours of unpaid time to teach new dispatchers in basic telecommunications and fire dispatching during the Academy’s early years.  Please see the attached link to his obituary notice:

Remark from Seekonk Director of Communications Christopher Campbell. “ Red was a great guy and influenced my career greatly.”

Remark from Gardner Director of Communications Lori Lyons “Another great 911 peer who’s smile warmed many – sad for the loss, thoughts and prayers to all who’s lives he touched RIP”

Remark from Holbrook Regional PSAP Communications Director Steve Hooke “Bob was a great guy. Thoughts and prayers to his family. RIP”
Remark from Rochester Communications Director Tracy Eldridge “I too heard of his passing yesterday, very sad for the 911 communications world he was a good guy :( “
Remark from State 9-1-1 Program Manager Monna Wallace “Very sad, I remember him with fond  memories for his dedication and loyalty to
9-1-1.”

Remark from Cambridge Administration & Training Supervisor Leslie Carroll “ It seems like yesterday we were laughing at a meeting somewhere. Your friendship and professional guidance will be sorely missed.”
